Eco farming - Boost to tribal farmers

Provision of water through water management program is not enough. Unsustainable agricultural practices are compromising the natural resource base upon which all food production depends. Sustainable development lies on improved productivity of the land on sustained basis. Hence we emphasize on establishing affordable technologies for sustainability of the tribal farmers. The major components that has been emphasized are:

  • Demonstration of eco-friendly agriculture,
  • Introduction of Mixed cropping, organic manure,
  • Capacity building through technical & practical training and
  • Mobilizing Support through networks & Linkage.

Models on intensive crop management has been taken up to demonstrate that small land holding of an average farmer is capable of producing different variety of crops through out the year by adopting organic farming practices. Different varieties of new crops and vegetables have been demonstrated in people’s lands. The impacts are the following:

  • Different plant protection measures have been adopted by the farmers.
  • Adoption of High yielding variety of vegetables, cereals & pulses increased in the area
  • The beneficiaries have started reducing application of chemical fertilizer
  • Seasonal migration checked by 30%.
  • 80% of women labour engaged in the construction work.
  • Federation of Farmers have been emerged at GP level for management & maintenance of the irrigation structures and also continue the agricultural promotion without any external support.
  • Cropping pattern has been diversified with taking up of mixed farming and in the area. The willingness among the farmers towards mixed cropping from mono-cropping has been noticed.
  • The change towards agro-horticulture and agro-forestry pattern has created the demonstrative effect over the people in the watershed with increasing demand for he same. This has been introduced as the new measures in the area.
  • The barefoot technicians have executed their technical know how in the field.
  • Mixed cropping & line sowing have been adopted by the trained farmers.
  • Strong network established between different committees.
